natchitoches kisses!

after a jam-packed thanksgiving day, i headed on home (hello, black friday!) but jon and jasper headed on to natchitoches to spend the weekend with gram and pop.

lucky them!

gram and jaz share…  something.  apples, maybe?

and now they share a kiss!

i don’t know what jasper is doing here but i am pretty sure she is Planning Something Eventful.

she just has that look on her face.

3 days to visit and Do Stuff is never enough time, is it?

another sweet gram and jasper kiss!

no such thing as too many of those!

the thanksgiving turkey trot!!

the morning of thanksgiving day, we did our annual Gobble, Gobble Run so we can feel better about gobble, gobbling all that food down later!

it was chilly, early and still managed to be way more fun that it sounds…  i swear, it’s way more fun!

what kind of face is jasper making here?  i almost don’t even want to know!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

jasper is impatiently waiting until its time to start moving towards the start line and by impatient, i mean, “mama, why are we having to stand here?  didn’t we come to run?”

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

jon captures me in the crowd!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

and i?  i get to capture mom and jasper lilith!

we started off walking the 5K but it wasn’t long before jasper reminds us that she wants to RUN – “mama, i’m ready to be the tortoise now and then when i see the finish line, i can be the hare, ok?”

so we start running shortly into the course and i will be darned if jaz doesn’t run straight through the entire 5k!!!  3 miles of Running Jasper!

mom put the kabosh on running up the hills  so we all walked up the hills (yeah, there were, “why are we walking?” questions from the girl but she dealt with the walking in a mostly gracious manner) but the rest of the course was a steady jogging pace that mom and jasper set.

and so we ran!

and it was wonderful to run with my two ladies!

the three of us!  the finish line!  a good combination if you ask me!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

look at those happy faces!

i tell you what,  the finish line is an exciting thing to run towards no matter what!  and when you are holding the hand to your minerature runner who is also holding the hand to your mother all while running towards your hubby who also happens to be standing at the finish line?  well, that’s a powerful combination.  EVEN BETTER THAN CHOCOLATE.

just a note:  jasper’s cheeks are filled with post-race banana…  this is why she looks  like a chipmunk.

the rest of us, however, are banana-free and smiling!

happy trails, kiddo.

our next mother-daughter run?  the jiggle butt 5k run in january!!!!!!!!

mom, you ready? (p.s. it’s  girls only!)

a playful kitten…

here she is!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

actually, this is jasper being a puppy…  my bad.

(man, does she look like a little, girly jon or what??!!)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

and there we are:  kitty ears!  jasper is putting on an impromptu, “kitty performance” for me.

lucky me 🙂

and now the daddy dog (note the puppy-eared pink headband on jon’s head, please.  did you see it?  yeah, you did.) makes his appearance in the kitty performance and attacks the jasper-kitten!  hilarity and mayhem ensue.

(don’t worry:  no daddies or jaspies were harmed during the making of this video…)

because yes, there IS a video – did you really think that jon could don a pink headband with puppy ears without me taking a video of it?  plus they were  supercalifragilisticexpialidociously cute.

(but he won’t let me post it….  ‘cuz it is that cute, y’all…)

do you want to see a pretty bird?

ok, here you go:

taaa-daaa!!!  another jon masterpiece!!

a beautiful brined and roasted turkey courtesy of my man (and alton brown…  oh, and jasper, of course)!

if you are wondering what a brined turkey is – well, don’t wonder anymore – check that link out and do it!

you will thank me…  or jon…  you will thank at least one of us!

“daddy, that is a BIG turkey!  are we going to eat all that?”

oh, yes, honey bunches of sweetness…  yes, we are.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

as jasper said, it was a big turkey so the turkey carving and subsequent stripping off all the meat took forever

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

at least, it seemed like it took forever…  but we eventually had that carcass completely stripped of meat and into the crock pot so we could make turkey stock!!!  yum!

i think i am set for lunch for some time now…

and yes, it is de.  li.  cious.  period.

milk. it does a body good…

but a cup doesn’t hurt either.  am i right?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

look at her!  staring right at me while she does it too!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

there is a slice of the main culprit right there!  jon!  totally over there egging her on and, in fact, showing her how to “do it right“!

if you ask me, doing it right would be using a cup but i was simply the wildlife photographer in this instance.

the ditto dash…

jasper lilith’s school had what they called The Ditto Dash last weekend and you had better believe that jon and jasper ran it!

the two of them ran the 1 mile fun run while i was bundled up on the sidelines cheering them in to the finish line!

i didn’t have time before work to run with them but i can do Cheerleader with the best of them 🙂

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

all ditto-dashed up and raring to go!

(and what time in the morning was it, you ask?  why, i’ll tell you:  Too Early For A Saturday Morning If You Ask Me Time…  it’s true; that’s what my phone said…

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

the three of us go out every sunday to the dam – jasper rides her bike while jon and i run beside her (or behind her when she is racing her “horse”) and the last couple of sundays before the Dash, we worked on jasper being able to run a full mile without stopping…  jon and she would run while i walked with the bike and then we would switch…  jasper and i would run together while jon got stuck on bike duty…  and she would do most of it, there was whining and there was whimpering but we would keep at it and it paid off because jasper run the entire mile during the race without stopping!

jon also started taking her to a nearby park with a little walking trail and practicing with her there after school – they had fun and she enjoyed coming home to tell me about her run!  usually it’s the other way around and i could tell she enjoyed the tables being turned 🙂

jon and i used the tale of the tortoise and the hare to keep her from starting out fast and then gassing out immediately and she got pretty good at running slow and steady…  and then when she could see the end point, we would tell her she could be the hare and run as fast as she could!

i wonder how many other running coaches have used the same teaching technique?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

so needless to say, i was super-proud of my girl and my guy!

as the kiddos and parents mass up at the starting line, i get a cheerful jasper hello!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

and here they are!!!  they have run their mile and they are coming in to the finish line!!!!!!!!!!!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

apparently, she was telling herself throughout the race, “be the tortoise, jasper; just be the tortoise.”!!

in the third person, no less!

and then when she saw some landmark that made her realize she was close to the finish line, she asked jon, “can i be the hare now, daddy?”

and the hare she was!!  because they came in as fast as her little 5 year old legs would carry her!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

i swear, i was cheering so loud that if you stop for a minute?  you might still be able to hear me!

i was pretty stoked!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

there they are!  jasper is introduced to a standard After-The-Race Tradition – the stale bagel!!!

with water, of course 🙂

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

i bet a stale bagel never tasted so good.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

and then she asked for a “tiny sip of coffee to keep me warm” and i said yes…  of course i said yes.

i totally bragged on her running skills for the rest of the day!

unashamedly, unequivocal bragging…  it was good stuff.

sugar mountain…

and then we were home!  for the Dumping of the Candy and the creation of what i liked to call Sugar Mountain!

‘cuz it was a lot of candy…  a lot of sugar…  just a lot of well, everything!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

jon is diligently on Daddy Duty and giving all the candy a good checking out…

as well as giving me a not-so-good eyebrow raise for allowing our girl to eat an unchecked piece of candy before he could look at it!

i sang him my, “breakin’ the Rules, breakin’ the Rules!” song but well, he seemed to like it much less than jasper and i did…  i wonder why?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

hmmm, candy!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

“oh, mama!  i have a sugar headache!  i better stop before i vomit.”

it’s good to have a child that self-regulates…  of course, she had only had 2 pieces of candy at that point so i was more amused than anything else…

the drama, the drama!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

after the kids had their candy explosions, they hung out on the couch while the grown-ups hang out at the table and the guys steal…  fine, “pick out” their favorite types of candy from the kids bowls…  heather and i?  well, we just watched longingly…  or at least, that is what i was doing.

those calories can’t get me if i am just watching another person eat candy, right?  right??!!

anyway, we had a great halloween night with great company, great jack o’lanterns, cute kids, nice weather and a beautiful moon.

thanks, moon!
